'I will never forget that baby in the woods' - Police chief vows justice in killing of mom, daughter

Daniel Callihan and Victoria Cox face charges in the killing of Callie and Erin Brunett from Loranger.

JACKSON, Miss — Mississippi law enforcement was short on details but long on anger and pledges to get justice in the case of a mother who was killed and daughters who were abducted, one of whom was killed two weeks ago.

Daniel Callihan and Victoria Cox stand charged by a grand jury for child sexual abuse, and one count of murder for Cox and two for Callihan in the deaths of 35-year-old Callie Brunett and her 4-year-old daughter Erin.

Monday, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the state attorney general, and the Jackson Police Chief were among those on hand to pledge that the pair would be charged and given justice in Mississippi.

"Words cannot express the sorrow that we feel for the Brunett family in the wake of this unimaginable, difficult time," said Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch.

Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said that the crime scene where Erin Brunett was found was worked "extremely closely with a very, very microscopic approach."

He said law enforcement is still waiting for test results on evidence found in that field.

Wade was asked if Callihan's "confession" done as he was being brought to a vehicle for transportation to jail would be a factor in the case. He said Callihan's remarks, during which he said he had killed the young girl, were "(not) anything we had not heard."

Wade and the other law enforcement officers recounted the horrors of that day and said they would remain with those who worked on the case.

"I worked homicide for 9 years," said Wade. "I will never forget that baby in the woods."
