NEW ORLEANS — Dwayne Wells didn't think the last time he spoke to his son, Dajuan Wells, would be the last time.
"I’m glad I got the chance to tell him I love him. That’s important," Dwayne said.
Monday, his worst nightmare came true when he got a call that Dajuan was shot and killed. He was only 14 years old.
According to NOPD, the incident happened on Chef Menteur Highway around 4 p.m.
"I had to sit down. I had to grab a hold of everything. I’m hearing. Of course, I couldn’t stop crying because this was my biggest fear. Unfortunately, this has happened. It’s hurting," Wells said. "That’s my son. Everyone’s calling asking if I’m ok, no I’m not ok. I have to learn to be ok."
On Wednesday, NOPD announced they are looking for a person of interest in the case. Police say 23-year-old Malcolm Wiley is not wanted for the homicide, but Wiley may have information that could help solve the case.
While NOPD is trying to get more information, Dwayne is grieving a state away in San Antonio, Texas. He remembers his son as he tries to make sense of it all.
"He is a fantastic boy. His energy and his personality was charming; anyone he came in contact with was just naturally charming and easily influenced, unfortunately. He was just a typical young boy," Dwayne said.
As he's trying to get from Texas to New Orleans to bury his son, Dwayne hopes Dajuan's death sparks change.
"Get involved with your child if you’re not. Be involved, be more understanding, and just let them know you’re there," he said.
