Fatal shooting in St. James Parish leaves one dead, another hospitalized – sheriff says

According to the sheriff's office, the shooting occurred before 8:40 p.m. in the 2100 block of Louisiana Highway 44 in Lutcher.

LUTCHER, La. — UPDATE: On Thursday, the deceased victim was identified as Makhai Ramon Martin, a 19-year-old male from the Lutcher area. 

The St. James Parish Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting that left one man mortally wounded and another hospitalized on Tuesday night.

According to the sheriff's office, the shooting occurred before 8:40 p.m. in the 2100 block of Louisiana Highway 44 in Lutcher. The first call received was for a male victim shot, a second call 10 minutes later regarded another male victim shot in the same area.

SJPSO said they located a suspect's vehicle in an eastbound lane on the Westbank side of the Veterans Memorial Bridge with damage from gunfire.

"We received information that four males got out and left on foot," stated a post on the sheriff's office Facebook page. "Deputies from the St. James Parish and St. John Parish Sheriff’s Offices searched the area, but were unable to locate anyone."

Both victims were transported to area hospitals for medical treatment, one of which later succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased victim was identified as Makhai Ramon Martin, a 19-year-old male from the Lutcher area.

This is an active ongoing investigation.
