NEW ORLEANS — A man was hit and killed while walking along the interstate on Tuesday evening in New Orleans East, according to police.
The New Orleans Police Department said the fatal crash happened around 6 p.m. Officers said the person was struck on I-510 Southbound near the Lake Forest Blvd exit. When police arrived they said they saw a man lying on the road after he was hit by a driver.
NOPD said the driver stopped and called the " police because he had struck an unknown object in the left hand lane of traffic," in a release.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident. NOPD determines that the driver wasn't speeding and was not impaired, "due to these findings the driver of the vehicle was not charged with any violations at this time."
The Orleans Parish Coroner will officially identify the victim and determine cause of death in this incident upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.
Police said the victim died at the scene. No further information is available at this time.
