DALLAS — It is the happy moments with his mother that 19-year-old Elijah Ramos holds dear.
“She took us to the grocery store. She said pick out anything you want,” said Ramos.
At times, sadness creeps into those memories.
“At the end of it, she dropped us off over here and said you’re staying here now. That was kind of like the second to the last time I’ve seen her,” said Ramos.
In 2016, Ramos and three of his siblings were adopted by his paternal grandparents. He said their mother struggles with mental health issues. He also said he and his siblings sometimes faced mental and physical abuse.
“Because of her outbursts and stuff like that, we would have to stay outside stores for the night,” said Ramos.
That is why, Ramos said, he is scared for Alejandra, the little girl dropped off at Baylor University Medical Center on Monday. According to WFAA sources, Elijah is Alejandra’s oldest brother. They have never met.
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services initially said they believe her mother might have left her at the hospital. On Thursday, they were able to locate other family members.
“I was just spinning, you know? I was just trying to figure out what I can do for her at the moment,” said Ramos.
Alejandra is currently under CPS care, but family members tell us they have been in contact with DFPS to see what can be done for her.
“I want to at least meet her first and see what we can do for her, because I don’t want her to end up in a bad place. I want her to be with people who at least care about her and want to give her a brighter future,” said Ramos.
It is a future that Ramos now sees for himself.
“I feel like there’s been a reason why our mom dropped us off over here,” said Ramos. “Just keep a positive light on things because life itself is already too dark.”
Alejandra’s case is scheduled for a court hearing on Dec. 14. A judge will decide whether she stays in foster care or can live with family.
