Fake cop suspect tells JPSO reason he impersonated police – 'respect'

William Gilchrist, 45, is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and is scheduled to appear in federal court for a detention hearing on Friday.

NEW ORLEANS — The Mississippi man accused of impersonating a federal agent while unknowingly attempting to pull over a real detective admitted to the motive behind his actions.

Unlawfully armed with a firearm, handcuffs, a fake badge and U.S. Marshals Service ID, as well as blue lights and a siren affixed to his Tennessee-registered pickup truck, convicted felon 45-year-old William Gilchrist allegedly tried to pull over a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office detective along Airport Access Road in Kenner on June 19.

Following his arrest, Gilchrist told investigators he did so because "he wanted respect."

Due to a 2000 conviction in Arkansas for possession or manufacturing of drug paraphernalia, Gilchrist is barred from possessing a firearm.

Already facing charges in Louisiana district court for committing the alleged crime, Gilchrist was rearrested last week by the U.S. Marshals Service for impersonating a federal agent and possessing a firearm as a felon.

Gilchrist is scheduled to appear in federal court for a detention hearing on Friday.
