Deputy shoots man following Mystic Krewe of Music parade in Marrero, JPSO says

The shooting occurred just after 9 p.m. in the parking lot of a business in the 5900 block of Lapalco Boulevard.

A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputy shot a 59-year-old man allegedly driving towards the deputy in a Marrero parking lot not long after the Mystic Krewe of Music parade concluded Monday night.

JPSO's Sgt. Brandon Veal told WWL Louisiana that the incident occurred just after 9 p.m. in the parking lot of a business in the 5900 block of Lapalco Boulevard.

Veal also confirmed that a confrontation occurred after the parade had passed.

According to Sheriff Joseph Lopinto, the man was struck in the shoulder with a single shot during the incident which involved the man allegedly attempting to exit through an unauthorized portion of the parking lot where the deputy was positioned. The man then allegedly proceeded over a curb and approached the deputy in the vehicle while refusing to stop despite the deputy instructing him to do so.

"Clearly the car was moving forward right at our deputy and caused her to react," claimed Lopinto during a media briefing shortly after the incident.

WWL Louisiana obtained surveillance video from a nearby business that captured the incident.

WWL Louisiana's media partner NOLA.com reported that the man was taken to University Medical Center in New Orleans, where according to Lopinto he is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff also said body camera footage will be reviewed and investigators are taking statements from witnesses, the deputy and will get one from the victim.

The parade started on Lapalco and traveled east before turning left on Ames Blvd.
