Car crashes into Westbank home

NOPD said the driver was ticketed and Estem said she believes the car's brakes failed.

NEW ORLEANS — In Algiers a car slammed into a house on Wednesday. It nearly hit a grandmother, her daughter, and five grandkids as it plowed into their living room.

The reality of what happened in the 1600 block of Jo Anne Place is setting in for Darnell Estem.

"I was right there. I was right there," Estem said.

Around 10:30 p.m., she was in her living room with her daughter and five grandkids ages 12, 11, 9 and a pair of five-year-olds, when she heard something she thought sounded normal.

"I heard a car coming, but I thought it was going down the street".

Seconds later they were all running for their lives.

"All we heard was glass shattering, and when the glass started shattering, I looked at my grandbabies, and I said 'Run'," Estem explained.

In a split second, the instant shock faded away and Estem was able to get her family out safely.

"My daughter was just stuck. I told her we got to get out [its] smoking. She said 'Come on mom we're all going".

Her daughter took her grandchildren to a hospital to get check out. Luckily, everyone is okay.

NOPD said the driver was ticketed and Estem said she believes the car's brakes failed.
