NEW ORLEANS — Statistics that crime analyst Jeff Asher will present to the city council this week show what many have suspected, that the crime of car burglaries has skyrocketed in New Orleans in 2019 - a trend that has seemed to continue into this year.
Of 71 neighborhoods that are tracked in the city - all but 7 have seen the rate of car burglaries jump, with 16 neighborhoods seeing an increase of more than 100 percent - or double the previous year.
In comparing the 2018 and 2019 years, the numbers show which neighborhoods are most prone to having vehicles burglarized.
Here is the list, by which neighborhoods had the most burglaries per 1,000 addresses. The two highest neighborhoods each had more than 1 in 10 residences with at least one car burglarized.
The seven neighborhoods that stayed the same or showed a decrease in car burglaries were: Central City (-1 percent), B. W. Cooper (-29 percent), Whitney (-6 percent), Dixon (no change), Gert Town (-40 percent), West End (-17 percent) McDonogh (-14 percent).
