NEW ORLEANS — The last of two suspects convicted of killing two people and wounding five in an incident known as the "Burgundy Massacre" in New Orleans during August 2014 was sentenced to life in prison on two counts each of causing a death through the use of a firearm.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced the sentence of Blair Taylor on Tuesday.

In 2017, Taylor and his accomplice Joseph Nelson were originally convicted of murder in state court.  However, in 2021 they were granted new trials due to an 11-1 verdict after the United States Supreme Court found non-unanimous jury verdicts unconstitutional.

In October of 2022, the State of Louisiana retried Taylor and he was found not guilty. He was subsequently released from jail in March 2023. Then in June, a federal grand jury conducted an investigation and indicted Taylor, for the two murders.

Nelson pled guilty to two counts of manslaughter in exchange for a 30-year prison term.

The intended target of the drive-by shooting, 33-year-old Terrence McBride, died at the scene after being riddled with 10 bullets. Among the large group of innocent bystanders, 16-year-old Jasmine Anderson was killed by a gunshot wound to the head. She was supposed to start 8th grade the next day.

Five others were shot and severely injured. A four-year-old boy, now 12, was left blind. A two-year-old, now 10, has permanent brain damage. The boys' mother continues to suffer from grave complications from gunshot wounds to her stomach.
