BAYOU GAUCHE, La. — A 26-year-old was hospitalized after being shot when he allegedly refused to drop his handgun on Bayou Gauche Road over the weekend.

According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office, Dalton Todd was repeatedly asked to put down his weapon which first resulted in deputies firing "less-than-lethal" beanbag rounds, and then live ammunition once he refused to surrender the gun and pointed it a law enforcement.

Deputies were initially called to 3911 Louisiana Highway 306 at 9:26 p.m. on Sunday after a woman called for help claiming her boyfriend was holding a gun to her head.

Despite being stunned by the beanbag rounds, deputies were forced to shoot him at least three times as he continued his aggressive approach toward law enforcement while brandishing his weapon when he was approximately 15 yards away and closing.

Once shot, the SCSO says deputies immediately rendered medical care to Todd and applied tourniquets to stop the bleeding.

Todd was airlifted to University Hospital for treatment. He is currently listed in stable condition.

The sheriff's office says Todd has an extensive criminal background that includes drug charges, domestic violence charges, violation of protection orders, theft, DWI, and an incident where he attempted suicide.

Todd is currently hospitalized and will be transported to the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center.

He is expected to be booked on the following:

  • Active warrant for aggravated assault with a firearm
  • 5 counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer
  • Resisting an officer with force or violence

This is an active investigation. All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
