Inmate captured during Angola escape attempt

There have been few escapes at the Louisiana State Penitentiary. The last was back in 2017.

ANGOLA, La. — An Angola inmate made an unsuccessful escape attempt on Tuesday after allegedly stabbing another prisoner, WBRZ reported.

A source told our partners at WBRZ in Baton Rouge that after the stabbing, the man was somehow able to get on the roof of his housing unit, but was shot by a correctional officer with a non-lethal bean bag and taken back into custody.

There have been few escapes at the Louisiana State Penitentiary. The last was back in 2017. While in 2013, two inmates were able to break through a fence, but guards re-captured them a couple hours later.

"The cows helped us a lot, because the cows would see them and run out of the woods," said Former Warden Burl Cain. "Then the flock of ducks flew by, so they scared them out and we were watching all of that from the levee with thermal imagery. It was a pretty classic chase".

The Department of Corrections said this is an ongoing investigation. The inmate was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

He will likely face additional charges.
