'American Idol' contestant arrested for domestic violence in New Orleans, police say

Magistrate commissioner Peter Hamilton set his bond at $1,500.

NEW ORLEANS — An "American Idol" contender, now French Quarter performer was arrested and booked on Thursday for one count of domestic abuse battery.

According to our partners at Nola.com, 24-year-old Tyrell Maurice Jenkins, asked for a low bond during his appearance in the Orleans Parish Magistrate Court Friday afternoon.

He told magistrate commissioner Peter Hamilton that he is taking care of his pregnant dog "as well as a pregnant girlfriend."

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office did not immediately provide information on Jenkins case and the details of the allegations about Jenkins in New Orleans were not available Friday.

Jenkins auditioned for the competition in 2022 and said his life wasn't easy, Nola.com reported. His performance of "Whiskey Glasses" earned him "yes" votes from judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, according to Nola.com.

Along with this case, Jenkins has another pending case in Jefferson Parish. His alleged victim said she did not want a stay-away order during his court appearance on Friday.

Hamilton set his bond at $1,500.

Domestic abuse battery is a misdemeanor upon a first conviction, with a maximum 6-month jail sentence. Penalties rise with subsequent convictions.
