NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans police arrested a 19-year-old accused of killing two teenagers and wounding four more in a shooting outside a party in the Lower 9th Ward.
According to NOPD Homicide Division Capt. Kevin Burns, NOPD officers and US Marshals arrested Elijah Williams Tuesday morning. He's been booked on two counts of second-degree murder and four counts of attempted second-degree murder.
The shooting happened just after midnight on Dec. 26.
Surveillance video obtained by WWL-TV shows the shooter open fire on a crowd standing on the front porch of a home in the 2000 block of St. Maurice Avenue.
Two teenagers were killed and four more were wounded in the shooting.
One of the victims, Courtney Hughes, was a nursing student at Southern University who as home for the holidays when she was shot and killed.
The second was Kyron Peters, a talented athlete with dreams of playing the NBA who was set to graduate from Booker T. Washington High School this spring.
According to NOPD, several tips from Crimestoppers helped them identify Williams as a suspect.
Darlene Cusanza, President and CEO of Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans, said that the $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest will be split between multiple people.
"This really shows the family that this community stepped up, and stepped up in a big way, to help find justice for them," Cusanza said.
