NEW ORLEANS — The St. Bernard Sheriff's Office says they arrested two teenagers on Monday in a stolen U-Haul truck and one of the teens is an escaped juvenile inmate from the Bridge City Center for Youth.
An officer attempted to stop the pair in Chalmette after they failed to use a turn signal on East Girod Street. The teens were 16 and 15-years old.
Investigators say the 16-year-old refused to stop and eventually wrecked the truck near the 200 block of East Prosper Street. After wrecking, the teens ran away, but were arrested shortly after.
Officers learned that the U-Haul truck was stolen in Orleans Parish and involved in a hit-and-run earlier on Monday in St. Tammany Parish.
The 16-year-old was listed as a missing person out of Baton Rouge and as an escapee from the Bridge City Center for Youth, and the 15-year-old had an active warrant out of St. Bernard juvenile drug court.
Both juveniles were taken to the St. Bernard Parish Juvenile Detention Center.
The 16-year-old was booked on the following:
- Aggravated flight from an officer
- Resisting an officer
- Reckless operation of a motor vehicle
- Aggravated criminal damage
- Illegal possession of stolen property
- Driver must be licensed
- Fugitive escapee warrant.
The 15-year-old was booked on the following :
- Illegal possession of stolen property
- Resisting an officer
- On a bench warrant out of St. Bernard.
