TERREBONNE PARISH, La. — A 19-year-old man from Houma was arrested after a child ate a chocolate candy bar laced with drugs while under the care of a family member, according to the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office.

Sayonta Calloway faces charges of second-degree cruelty to juveniles in connection to the incident in the 200 block of Jolie Oaks Blvd on Friday, Feb. 23.

Deputies were called to the hospital and learned that the minor ate candy believed to have contained illegal narcotics.

At the time of the incident, the child was under the care of Calloway, who admitted to bringing the drugs inside the home.

Deputies said the mother, who was not home at the time of the incident, brought the child to the hospital after they started "acting differently."

The TPSO said the child is currently in stable condition and recovering from their injuries.

Calloway was later released on a $20,000 bond.

“These types of cases are always difficult to deal with, when a child is a victim of senseless actions," Sheriff Tim Soignet said. "Our Detectives and Patrol Division did an amazing job in dealing with a difficult situation. We are grateful that the victim is recovering, and our agency will do what is necessary to ensure this offender is brought to justice."
