Some 250 people have volunteered roughly 1600 hours with the organization since then and together have cleaned six consecutive blocks in the area.

NEW ORLEANS — Students from the University of Alabama did their part to help clean up the city this weekend.

Officials with the United Saints Recovery Project, a non-profit organization in New Orleans, said crews are almost done removing debris in the Florida -Desire neighborhood thanks to help from the volunteers.

Less than a year ago, the area was filled with overgrown grass, old cars, stacks of tire and other trash.

Some 250 people have volunteered roughly 1600 hours with the organization since then and together have cleaned six consecutive blocks in the area.

United Saints executive director Chris Scotland said this a chance for neighbors to take their community back and make it better.

"It's what we hoped for, it's why we we're in this neighborhood, there were neighbors who said they would get involved if we can just do some heavy lifting for them... it's why we do this in hopes this can happen," Scotland said.

Alabama student volunteers will be in town until Sunday to help in the clean up effort, the group said.
