NEW ORLEANS — It’s your money, and the Louisiana Department of Treasury wants you to claim it.
Every year the state department of revenue hands over unclaimed state tax refunds to the Louisiana Unclaimed Property Program. This year, it’s $8.7 million worth. That money belongs to 29,441 taxpayers.
According to the Louisiana Department of Treasury, folks may have lost track of their refund or have simply forgotten about it.
“This $8.7 million belongs to the people of Louisiana, and we are eager to assist them in rightfully claiming their money,” said State Treasurer John Fleming.
Claiming those tax refunds, or any other money with your name on it, is easy. A search on the state’s unclaimed property website will let you know if you have any unclaimed cash. All you need to do is claim it.
Until claimed, those refunds are part of a long list of unclaimed money. It comes from things like utility deposits, payroll, and even class action lawsuit settlements.
All of it belongs to current and former Louisiana residents. Whether it’s just a few dollars or something more substantial, knowing it’s there is the first step to a payout.
To start a search, visit the unclaimed property website. You can also access it through your smartphone’s LaWallet app.
