ALDI buys out Winn-Dixie as supermarket chain plans 800 store expansion

In August, ALDI first announced that they would buy Winn-Dixie and other stores owned by Southeastern Grocers, Inc., including Harveys Supermarkets.

NEW ORLEANS — Your local Winn-Dixie may become an ALDI within the next year, as ALDI officials announced Thursday that they would take over and add 800 new stores in the South.  

"ALDI will begin a phased approach to the store conversion process," ALDI representatives said on Thursday. "ALDI anticipates that approximately 50 stores will begin the conversion process during the latter half of, 2024, with the majority of these stores reopening as ALDI in 2025."

In August, ALDI first announced that they would buy Winn-Dixie and other stores owned by Southeastern Grocers, Inc., including Harveys Supermarkets.

Back then chain, based in Illinois, said that some Winn-Dixies would remain put without major changes. ALDI reiterated that pledge on Thursday.

"As announced last August, ALDI intends for a meaningful amount of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets to operate under their current banners," ALDI officials said Thursday.

The national expansion cost the company more than $9 billion, according to company-provided data.
