Algiers Point Restaurants worth trying

Food critic Ian McNulty says he's made quite a few trips across the river lately, with good results. He has 7 recommendations for varying tastes.

NEW ORLEANS — Algiers Point is a quiet, somewhat smallish neighborhood just across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. It takes a bit of work to get there by car, but, food critic Ian McNulty says there are more than a half dozen reasons you might want to do so, including a variety of restaurants, coffee shops and bars.

McNulty highlights them and says all are worth the trip and include restaurants that have reopened, reopened under new management, opened a new spot after being successful elsewhere and replaced previous spots.

NightHawk Napoletana – Making Neopolitan pizzas right out of wood-fired oven. Blazing hot which produces a wonderful crust on the pizzas. This is a family-friendly spot with a bar in the back. It’s very casual and it’s the first place you see coming off the ferry.  141 Delaronde Street.

Congregation Coffee – It’s returned. It had been around for a number of years. Closed earlier this year and has reopened with new owners Patrick Brennan of the Brennan family. 240 Pelican Avenue.

14 Parishes – Jamaican restaurant. First was on Oak Street and have expanded to the other side of the river. Charles and Lauren opened their spot for Island flavor and rum drinks at 801 Patterson Road.

Barracuda – Tacos and margaritas is an all outside restaurant. 446 Pelican Avenue.

Plume Algiers – Indian food, modern style. Just reopened after expansion.  1113 Teche

Little House – Wine bar. Worked itself into the neighborhood.  640 Bouny Street

Tonti’s – Classic French Bistro.  323 Verret Street.
