BATON ROUGE, La. — Authorities say a woman was arrested after allegedly taking an adoptable dog for a walk during a Baton Rouge Carnival parade and not returning.

WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge reports that Veronica Theurer now faces a theft of dog charge. The dog, a blue heeler lab mix named Bonnie, was found unharmed near a Greyhound bus station.

The arrest comes after the West Feliciana Animal Humane Society shared photos of a woman named "Veronica" who was walking Bonnie during the Mystic Krewe of Mutts parade Sunday. That post was shared nearly 5,000 times in less than 24 hours.

In a follow-up post on Monday, the humane society said that a police report had been filed in the case and a multi-parish search was underway to find the dog.

"Bonnie has been found safe and is on her way home! An arrest has been made," the page posted Monday.
