'We’re rebuilding' | Krewe of Nyx rolls Uptown with few floats

The krewe had 82 floats in 2020 and now they have just 16. “I think if you want to build a sisterhood, we’re the one you want to build it with,” one member said.

NEW ORLEANS — The Krewe of Druids rolled through Uptown, and their floats were packed full of riders. The Krewe of Nyx followed with a lighter load.

People lined the streets of Uptown, ready for another night of parades.

“I’m just excited about the parades, the marching bands, and seeing everyone set up,” one woman said.

As the Krewe of Nyx rolled down Magazine, some people began to roll out. Many of them told WWL Louisiana off camera that they couldn’t support the Krewe of Nyx.

The infamous krewe has been rejected by many.

Pete’s Irish Channel posted on their Instagram and referred to the krewe as “that other parade,” and Courtyard Brewery invited people to their annual “Skip Nyx party”.

It comes after the all-female krewe faced backlash in 2020. After George Floyd’s murder, Captain Julie Lea posted a on social media that “all lives matter.”

In the following months, the 3,400-member krewe saw a mass exodus, and thousands of members resigned.

“I’m not willing to put my money to any krewe that won’t say Black lives matter and trans lives matter,” one ex-member said after the krewe’s fallout.

Ex-members filed class action lawsuits against Lea and her husband, saying they refused to refund members who dropped out and pocketed krewe money.

The krewe had 82 floats in 2020 and now they have just 16.

The krewe barely meets its bare minimum, at roughly 250 members.

But the krewe continues to roll, and according to members, rebuild.

“I think it’s a great Krewe and we’re rebuilding,” one member said. “I think if you want to build a sisterhood, we’re the one you want to build it with.”

The Krewe of Babylon, Chaos, and Muses will roll on Thursday in Uptown.
