Big changes could be coming for Carnival 2025

On Wednesday, the New Orleans City Council voted to move the Krewe of Alla to one of the most coveted nights on the Carnival parade schedule.

NEW ORLEANS —  A big change could be coming for Carnival 2025.

“I think this is going to be a really great move for the krewe and the city,” Queen of Alla Gian Durand said.

On Wednesday, the New Orleans City Council voted to move the Krewe of Alla to one of the most coveted nights on the Carnival parade schedule.

“It preserves Wednesday night because, without Allah, there would be no Wednesday night.

According to Krewe Captain Adam Strickland, rolling on Wednesday night would be easier on Krewe members and city workers, saying the late nights hinder membership.

“We’ve had some very late nights which means all the city personnel that make it happen, NOPD, NOFD, they don’t go home till we go home,” Krewe of Alla Captain Adam Strickland said.

For over a decade, the Krewe of Nyx rolled the Wednesday before Fat Tuesday, but the city council voted unanimously to revoke the Krewe’s parade permit earlier this year after they failed to meet minimum unit requirements last carnival season.

That’s only scratching the surface of the Krewe’s complicated past, which includes controversial social media posts and class action lawsuits.

“Our membership looks a lot like the city we roll in. We’re a very open and diverse organization,” Strickland said.

Once a member of the Krewe of Nyx, Gian Durand now proudly rains as the Queen of Alla.

“This was so important to me on so many levels,” Durand said.

She says rolling once again on Wednesday night would be symbolic for a city moving forward.

“That’s what it’s about. We have to move forward as the city,” Durand said.

The Krewe of Alla crowned its first Black queen and king this year. On Thursday, the full council will vote on the ordinance.
