HARVEY, La. — On Saturday, the Krewe of Athena hosted its first-ever Juneteenth celebration in Harvey.
The theme of the event was, "Building on the promise of freedom." And plenty of people came out to celebrate the holiday weekend.
Krewe Captain Taisha Williams Payne was one of the organizers of the event.
"Today's event was intended to celebrate, but also to bring the community out," Payne said. "We've come a long way, there's a lot for us to celebrate, and we just wanted the community to remember but also take steps and think about how we move forward."
There was music, food, and other activities, like arts and crafts, for attendees of all ages to enjoy.
