Student activists not phased by Trump’s tweet on Second Amendment

The students, both on the verge of graduating, know they face a difficult challenge, combating the controversial issue of gun control but say they want to make a difference before more lives are lost.

The March For Our Lives in Washington D.C. was a day Juan Semexant and Azizi Mathews will never forget.

Along with chaperones, the seniors made the more than 20-hour bus trip last weekend with more than 40 of their classmates at Marion Abramson High School.

"Our kids might be learning about this,” said Mathews. “It will be amazing to tell them I was a part of this.”

"Usually when I cry, it is in spiritual place but there I felt like it was also a right place to cry," said Semexant.

But was the White House watching?

President Donald Trump tweeted early Wednesday, the Second Amendment will never be repealed when responding to an Op-Ed in the New York Times by retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, claiming it would weaken the NRA’s ability to block gun control legislation.

Mathews and Semexant aren’t phased. They weren't marching to abolish guns.

"We are out here singing, we are out here creating speeches just about creating stricter gun laws,” said Semexant. “Stricter gun laws, not abolish weapons."

Instead the two would like to see mandatory background checks, firearms licenses and age restrictions.

At times, President Trump has embraced the importance of gun control calling on lawmakers to enact gun safety legislation. He even toyed with the idea of increasing the age to buy a rifle from 18 to 21. He later changed his position. But after marching in our nation's capital, these students say they have the power to make a change, if things don’t change.

"After every speech they would start a chant, 'vote them out, vote them out' and that's the power, as the youth, that's the power we hold," said Semexant.

The students, both on the verge of graduating, know they face a difficult challenge, combating the controversial issue of gun control but say they want to make a difference before more lives are lost.

“Things like this shouldn't be happening and knowing I have the voice I'll be able to say it's time to put our foot down and stop this."
