Police say it happened around 1 a.m. on the elevated portion of the twin spans near Highway 11/Ridgeway Boulevard.

NEW ORLEANS — A stretch of I-10 eastbound is back open after a car crash killed a man.

The New Orleans Police Department said it happened around 1 a.m. on the elevated portion of the twin spans near Highway 11/Ridgeway Boulevard.

Investigators say officers responded to calls of a vehicle on fire. Police say only one vehicle was involved in the crash.

A 2002 Ford F-250 pickup truck caught fire and pulled to the right side of the highway. An adult male occupant of the Ford exited the on-fire vehicle and was struck by a 2019 KIA operated by an adult female who was in the right lane of the highway.

New Orleans EMS responded to treat the male victim and confirmed he was deceased. The victim was transported to the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office.

The driver of the KIA, who remained on the scene, was tested for intoxicants and the results were negative. She was released once the on-scene investigation was complete.

Anyone with information regarding the fatal traffic accident is asked to call the Fatality Unit at 504-658-6205
