Hundreds rally in front of City Hall in local March For Our Lives

They were part of thousands who marched in every state across the country demanding gun control.

NEW ORLEANS -- Crowds took to the streets in the local March For Our Lives event Saturday, rallying in front of City Hall to protest gun violence at schools and push politicians for tighter gun laws.

They were part of thousands who marched in every state across the country demanding gun control.

"It's so great to see so many people care about this issue," said Louise Oliver, a student at Ben Franklin High School who helped organize the events.

Oliver said the marchers don't want to take guns away from owners, but to put new laws in place aiming to keep people safe, such as raising the age to own a gun.

The march was organized by students who say school shootings are becoming an epidemic.

"Every youth should be able to grow up and die of old age, not by a stray bullet of a man who couldn't hold his own ways," one protestor said.

The march comes in response to a school shooting in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead. Students all across the country have had enough and adults are backing them up.

"As a teacher the moment my government says I have to have a gun in my hand to educate my kids, I will quit," one teacher at the march said.

"Common sense gun control, not taking anybody's guns away but making sure our students and our citizens are safe," another teacher said.
