NEW ORLEANS – Four people were injured after a house collapsed in Central City on Monday afternoon, the New Orleans Fire Department says.
The fire department received a report of a building collapse around 4:20 p.m. in the 2300 block of Washington Avenue. The house was being renovated and suffered a “complete pancake collapse,” the fire department says.
The three contractors working on the house were able to escape and were taken to an area hospital. Two of the contractors are currently listed in serious condition with severe cuts, broken bones and symptoms consistent with concussions. The third contractor received minor bruises and cuts.
A man who lives in a neighboring residence received minor bruises when the home fell onto the side of his property. He was also taken to the hospital for further observation, and has been ordered not to re-enter his home until the property can be assessed for structural stability.
Fire fighters conducted searches of the collapsed home to make sure no one was trapped inside.
The New Orleans Police Department and Entergy assisted with this incident. The American Red Cross was also on the scene to assist the neighbor was displaced.
